Dr. Gopinatha Rao Memorial Lecture on International Microorganisms Day
September 17 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm
The Department of Biosciences, in collaboration with the Institution’s Innovation Council at SSSIHL, will host a two-day celebration for International Microorganisms Day on 16 & 17 September 2024 at the Prasanthi Nilayam campus. This event will bring together distinguished experts and participants, offering an opportunity to dive into the fascinating world of microorganisms through hands-on workshops, lectures, and an engaging exhibition.
The first day is dedicated to a workshop on microbial handling techniques and biosafety, allowing participants to gain practical experience in essential microbial practices such as Gram staining, antibiotic susceptibility testing, and yeast/fungal culture techniques.
The highlight of the second day will be the esteemed Dr. K Gopinatha Rao Memorial Lecture, delivered by Prof. V Nagaraja, an Honorary Professor at IISc, Bengaluru, and Former President of JNCASR, Bengaluru. The event will also feature a special address by the Guest of Honour, Prof. D Narasimha Rao, Former Professor at IISc, and Convener of the Talent Development Centre, IISc, Bengaluru. Concluding the celebration will be the exhibition, “Into the Microbial World,” offering a visual and interactive exploration of the relationship between humans and microbes through posters and live demonstrations.
This annual observance on 17th September commemorates the groundbreaking discovery by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek in 1683 when he first reported the existence of single-celled organisms to the Royal Society of London. The understanding of these ‘animacules’ now recognized as microbes, has since revolutionized science and continues to influence various aspects of our lives.
