Prof. K B R Varma
Prof. K B R Varma assumed charge as the tenth Vice-Chancellor of SSSIHL on 23 November 2014.
Prof. Varma was Professor and Chairman, The Materials Research Centre (MRC) at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore until his appointment at SSSIHL. He received his Ph.D. degree in Physics from Madras University, Chennai, India in 1981. He was a postdoctoral researcher with the Dept. of Pure and Applied Chemistry, Strathclyde University, Glasgow, United Kingdom. He then joined the Indian Institute of Science. His research interests include dielectrics, ferroelectrics, non-linear optics and electro optics with a focus on functional ceramics, glass nanocrystal composites, single crystals, Bio-ceramics, etc.
He was the Amrut Mody Chair Professor at the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore. He received the Materials Research Society of India’s Gold Medal and Lifetime achievement award of Instrument Society of India in the years 1998 and 2015 respectively. He is also a member of the Materials Research Society of India, the Instrument Society of India and the American Ceramic Society.
Prof. Varma is an Associate Editor of the Bulletin of Material Science. As an academic visitor, he has visited several institutions, including:

  • Nagaoka University of Technology, Nagaoka, Niigata, Japan
  • Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel

  • University of Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France
He has participated in several national and international conferences; authored or co-authored over 300 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and supervised 30 Ph.D. candidates.
He has three patents to his credit.
